HRSH

A talented rapper and artist from Waukegan. Since meeting him back in 2019, his rapping, sound, and style have become more polished. With his new project, Extra Planet A, you can tell he’s really stepped out of his usual style to explore something more. With the spacy sounds and vocals, it gives you a feel of something out of this world. It honestly feels like your transported into a world HRSH created. With the song ‘Flying Kites’ I got the feel of being on the flight deck while orbiting another planet. To me, HRSH is onto something special with this album. A masterpiece of his own music thus far. I enjoy the fact he’s reaching for more with his music. HRSH isn’t afraid to step out into something new with his music either. It really shows he’s willing to take risk to create something special. It’s been a pleasure watching and listening to him grow more into his role within his music.

Who is HRSH?

I’m just a guy from Waukegan, who grew up on 90’s rap, loves art, and enjoys anything that deals with different culture.

Where did your album “He Really Should Hide” come from and what was the motivation behind it?

First off, I have a real big fascination with Kaws and his art in general. When I started making the album, I was looking through one of his books, ‘Where the End Starts’, which I titled the first song on this project. As I looked through the book, I noticed that he had a lot of obscure names to his paintings and thought, how can I make an album where the songs would sound like they were titles of Kaw’s paintings. That’s when I thought about using my own name as the title to the album. HRSH looks like it could be an acronym, ‘He Really Should Hide’ was created. I came up with the title because the last time I had put out a project was in 2017. I feel as if I had been hidden, in the sense of expressing myself. I wanted to show people what I was doing during that time and move forward with my music.

How did you decide what beats to use?

I thought the title sounded eerie, like it had this mystery attached to it, this person who was in hiding. I chose beats that I thought encompassed that feeling.

I received the beats for ‘He Really Should Hide’ through multiple people. A few of the beats were from a guy named Grimm Doza. I have a couple of Lord Fubu beats on the album. A friend from my hometown, Don Trivino, sent me a beat. I also got to work with a really dope artist named Snubnose Frankenstein from LA, who I had to work at to get him to send me a beat.

What artist at the moment are you finding motivation from or who, in general, are you finding motivation from?

At the moment, I’d have to say Kobe Bryant, I admire the way he thought, the way he lived, his work ethic, and his pursuit of perfection. You can gain so much for yourself by following the example he set for others. Another artist that I draw motivation from Action Bronson. He is one of my favorite rappers. When I listen to him, I get inspired to be more creative and have fun when I am making music. I do find myself getting motivation from this producer from New Jersey, who’s based in LA, named Knxwledge. I like the way he presents his music and expresses himself by using various genres like jazz, soul, old school hip-hop, and modern rap. His style of music is so different from anything I have heard before.

What inspires you to make music? What keeps you going?

I find that I’m inspired by the time period I grew up in. I like to make music that is similar to early Pharrell, Kayne, Lupe, The Cool Kids, and Kid Cudi. Music that reminds me of the Myspace era. I think my friends also keep me inspired since we are all into doing the same thing, making music.

When people listen to your music, how do you want them to feel, what are you trying to get across to them?

I just want them to feel like they get a sense of where I’m coming from.

What do you feel is the best song you have released up to this point?

The best song that I have released so far, I would say is the song Iceberg, from the album, ‘He Really Should Hide’. When I created the song, I was trying to recreate a Lupe Fiasco song, Gold Watch, with my own spin on it. I think I did that really well with this song. I reference him at the beginning and finish with a similar flow to his at the end. When I listen to it, I still think, “damn, I can’t believe I made a song like that!”. It brings me back to the feeling of being a kid.

Where do you want to take your music? What is your goal?

I want to continue to reach like-minded people, those who are open to what my friends and I are expressing. I enjoy knowing I can reach a demographic that’s like me. People who understand what I’m doing and why I’m doing it. I don’t feel the need to become famous, but if I do that’s great. My main goal is to continue to do what I love and enjoy those around me who love it too.

-Extra Credit-

When we last talked about your music you were working on an EP that was released in 2020, ‘At This Time’, which is available now. Fast forward 2 years and where is HRSH now? What can we as listeners look forward to?

Since my last project, ‘He Really Should Hide’ in 2019. I’ve become more comfortable and open to trying new angles with my music. You’ll hear it when you listen to, ‘Extra Planet A’. There are melodies and singing that are involved a good amount in this one. I’ve always enjoyed R&B or soul music with melody. I just never felt comfortable trying my hand at it. I’m at the point now, where I’m eager to see how the listeners will take to it. That’ll let me know if I should keep heading in this direction. I’ve been having a great time putting ‘Extra Planet A’ together. Honestly, for me it has this atmosphere of actually being on another planet. I’m excited to see how the album comes across to the listeners.
